Former Telangana governor Jishnu Dev Varma reaches Mumbai ahead of oath ceremony today

Maharashtra’s Governor-designate, Jishnu Dev Varma , arrived in Mumbai this afternoon ahead of assuming office as the state’s governor. He was welcomed at the airport by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his wife Sudha Dev Varma , along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar , Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde , Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde , state police chief Sadanand Date , and Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti .

Jishnu Dev Varma, a senior political leader and seasoned administrator, is scheduled to be sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra at Lok Bhavan in South Mumbai today. Lok Bhavan is the ceremonial residence and official office of the state governor.

His appointment follows a major gubernatorial reshuffle announced by President Droupadi Murmu , in which he was transferred from his current post as Governor of Telangana to Maharashtra one of India’s most politically and economically significant states.

Earlier in his career, Varma served as Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, handling key portfolios including finance, power, planning, and rural development. He is a long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party with deep roots in northeastern politics.

Before departing Hyderabad, Varma received an emotional farewell at Raj Bhavan, Telangana , where officials and staff expressed gratitude for his service. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy , accompanied by Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy , paid a courtesy visit to Varma, a customary gesture acknowledging the governor’s contributions and ensuring a smooth transition.

Jishnu Dev Varma took over as Governor of Telangana in July 2024 , succeeding C.P. Radhakrishnan , and maintained cordial relations with the state government during his tenure.

Following Varma’s transfer, Shiv Pratap Shukla , former Governor of Himachal Pradesh and a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana . Shukla is expected to assume office shortly and formally enter Telangana’s Lok Bhavan . Jishnu Dev Varma ’s appointment and the accompanying administrative changes reflect the central government’s ongoing efforts to realign key constitutional positions across the country.
