
India Brings Together Global Experts For First International Eye Research Meet
India will host its first international conference dedicated to ophthalmology research as the Department of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), in collaboration with the All India Ophthalmological Society, organises the two-day AIOS-AFOU 2026 at the Manekshaw Centre on May 9 and 10.
The conference will be inaugurated by Sanjay Seth in the presence of the Chief of Defence Staff, the three service chiefs and the Defence Secretary, underlining the event’s tri-service and national importance.
Nearly 200 ophthalmologists and military eye specialists from across the country are expected to participate in the conference, which will focus on the latest developments in ophthalmology and eye-care research. More than 100 faculty members from leading institutions , including AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Sankara Nethralaya and Aravind Eye Care System, will take part in the event.
Internationally renowned ophthalmologists Harminder Singh Dua and Colin Siang Hui Tan are also scheduled to attend. Prof Dua is globally recognised for his research on chemical eye injuries and the discovery of Dua’s Layer in the cornea, while Dr Tan is known for his expertise in retinal imaging, diabetic retinopathy and artificial intelligence-driven eye diagnostics.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the conference aims to provide a platform for young serving ophthalmologists to interact with leading experts and learn about advancements in eye care and medical technology. The event is also expected to strengthen civil-military cooperation in ophthalmology and promote collaborative research in the field.
