British Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to resign on Friday despite Labour suffering heavy losses in local elections across England, as Nigel Farage’s Reform UK made major gains in what analysts described as a historic political shift.

The elections, involving nearly 5,000 council seats and regional contests in England, Scotland and Wales, were widely viewed as a referendum on Starmer’s leadership less than two years after Labour’s landslide 2024 general election victory.

Early results showed Labour losing control of at least eight councils, including Hartlepool, Wigan, Halton and Tameside, while projections suggested the party could lose more than 1,200 councillor seats nationwide. Labour also lost symbolic councils such as Westminster and Wandsworth in London.

Meanwhile, Reform UK gained more than 350 council seats and seized control of councils including Newcastle-under-Lyme and Havering in London. Farage called the results a “historic shift in British politics” as his anti-immigration party surged in Labour’s traditional working-class strongholds.

Speaking after the results, Starmer admitted Labour had endured a “really tough” night but insisted he would continue as prime minister. “I’m not going to walk away,” he told reporters, arguing voters were frustrated by the slow pace of change rather than Labour’s overall direction.

Reports said some Labour MPs privately discussed possible successors, including Wes Streeting , Angela Rayner and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham , amid fears the party could face deeper setbacks before the next general election due by 2029.

The results also highlighted growing support for the Green Party and Liberal Democrats, underlining the rapid fragmentation of Britain’s traditional two-party political system.
