Unsung heroes of power: India celebrates linemen who keep the lights on
When storms lash cities, when cyclones snap electric lines, and when entire neighbourhoods plunge into darkness, there is a group of workers who step out without hesitation. India’s power linemen climb poles, repair damaged cables, and restore electricity often in the harshest conditions to keep the nation running.
Electricity has become the backbone of modern life , powering homes, hospitals, industries, and communication systems. Behind this vast network stands the tireless workforce of linemen working across utilities under the guidance of institutions such as the Central Electricity Authority and the Ministry of Power.
The job of a lineman is both physically demanding and highly risky . Whether it is heavy rain, thunderstorms, or extreme summer heat, they climb electric poles, fix transformers, and repair snapped wires to restore supply as quickly as possible. During cyclones, floods, or other disasters, when most people remain indoors, linemen are among the first responders , working through the night to bring power back to homes and essential services.
Recognising their contribution, the government and power sector utilities recently observed Lineman Diwas on March 7 , honouring the frontline workforce that keeps India’s electricity system running. Organised by the Central Electricity Authority with participation from power companies across the country, the event acknowledged the courage, dedication, and professionalism of these workers who often risk their lives while performing their duties.
The celebration also highlighted the need for stronger safety practices , including the use of protective equipment, regular training, and strict operational protocols to minimise risks during maintenance work.
Across many states, power utilities now provide insurance coverage, safety kits, and compensation benefits for linemen working in hazardous environments. However, experts believe these protections should be uniform across the country so that every lineman receives proper financial security and safety support.
Beyond ceremonies and recognition, linemen deserve better equipment, reliable insurance protection, and greater respect for the role they play in nation building. Every time electricity returns after a blackout, it is often because somewhere, a lineman climbed a pole in the dark so that millions could return to normal life.
