Why IPL 2026 Final Was Moved Out Of Bengaluru: The Ticket Demand Storm

The decision to move the IPL 2026 final and playoff matches away from Bengaluru has now sparked a major debate in Indian cricket circles. What was expected to be a grand homecoming for the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium eventually turned into a controversy over complimentary tickets and limited seating capacity.

According to a BCCI source , the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had requested an additional 10,057 complimentary tickets , beyond the quota it was already entitled to under IPL regulations. The demand reportedly played a crucial role in the BCCI’s decision to shift the marquee matches out of Bengaluru.

Under normal IPL rules, the host association receives complimentary tickets amounting to 15 per cent of the stadium’s total capacity . However, with the Chinnaswamy Stadium accommodating only around 35,000 spectators , the extra demand created a serious logistical challenge.

The issue became even more complicated because a significant number of passes were reportedly meant for government representatives and other commitments. Around 900 complimentary passes were needed for MLAs and MLCs , while additional allocations were expected for an expert committee and other state government-related obligations.

Apart from complimentary tickets, the KSCA also sought thousands of tickets at concessional prices for cricket clubs, life members, and member families. Once these allocations were considered, the number of tickets left for ordinary fans reportedly dropped to nearly 20,000 .

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal admitted that hosting the final in Bengaluru became “untenable” due to the limited availability of tickets for the public. The BCCI believed that an IPL final, which attracts fans from across India and abroad, required a larger stadium and wider ticket access.

As a result, the playoff matches will now be held in Dharamsala and New Chandigarh , while the grand final on May 31 will take place at the massive Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The development has once again highlighted the growing tension between administrative privileges and fan access in Indian cricket’s biggest tournament.
