Women are entering India’s seafaring workforce in steadily rising numbers, giving real context to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s statement that women’s participation in the maritime sector has surged sharply since 2020. The rise is significant, even if the gender gap remains wide.

According to the latest available Directorate General of Shipping data, India had 3.07 lakh active seafarers in 2024 , of whom only 1.9% were women . In absolute terms, the number of active women seafarers rose from about 1,599 in 2021 to 5,929 in 2024 , while the government had earlier reported 4,770 active women seafarers in 2023 . That makes the trend clear: from almost negligible numbers three decades ago, women are now slowly but firmly claiming space in a profession long dominated by men.

The journey itself is important. India opened the seafaring profession to women in 1991 , and the number remained modest for years. The present rise may still look small against a male dominated workforce, but it marks a welcome social and professional shift. Programmes such as Sagar Mein Samman are aimed at recognising and supporting women seafarers, especially as they work in demanding conditions far from home.

For young women, the merchant navy can be a serious career option. Students can enter the deck side through Diploma in Nautical Science or B.Sc Nautical Science , usually after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics . Maritime training routes generally require 10+2 with PCM and at least 60% marks , along with minimum English marks. Marine engineering routes are open through engineering degrees or approved marine engineering courses, while GP Rating and technical routes are available for eligible diploma or ITI candidates.

The attraction is not only adventure. Pay can be strong, especially after sea time and certification. Entry level cadets and ratings commonly start around ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 per month , while trained officers, engineers and senior ranks can earn much higher, depending on vessel type, employer, foreign flag exposure and experience. Life at sea is not easy, but it offers global exposure, disciplined training, long leave cycles and faster financial independence than many conventional careers.

The numbers show both progress and unfinished work. Women are still only about one in every 50 Indian seafarers , but the direction is encouraging. For girls willing to take the tougher route, the sea is no longer closed. It is opening, one voyage at a time.
